Strategic Repertoire Development Consultant
Whether your orchestra wants to engage untapped audience segments, attract new donors, address historical inequities, or reinforce its reputation as an artistic leader, thoughtful repertoire development is essential for your long-term sustainability. As a consultant specializing in data-driven orchestral programming of works by women, non-binary, and BIPOC composers, I bring together deep data resources, musical knowledge, and industry experience to help your orchestra develop its artistic offerings thoughtfully and effectively. My comprehensive approach includes:
Strategic Conductor Matching
I use analysis of the repertoire of hundreds of conductors to suggest those who will propel you towards your goals. The analysis includes how much music by women and BIPOC composers each conductor programs and what types of orchestras they conduct at. It also includes which composers they champion, how wide their range is (i.e. do they repeat one work often or perform many works), and whether they tend to program large works by diverse composers, or focus more on short openers.
Custom Repertoire Solutions
Drawing from a large database of works by women, non-binary, and BIPOC composers—including instrumentation, duration, and historical performance data—I help you to efficiently identify repertoire that matches your needs. This systematic approach will save you hours of searching composers’ websites and allow you to focus on artistic decision-making.
Progress Measurement & Goal Setting
I analyze your repertoire history to benchmark your orchestra’s programming diversity and help you understand what progress you have made already. This is the basis on which we will work together to build ambitious and achievable goals that align with your strategic ambitions, and to measure future progress.
Organizational Alignment
Artistic programming has many stakeholder groups, including administration, orchestral musicians, conductors, marketing and communications, boards, current audience members, and potential future audience members. Drawing on my training as a commercial and civil mediator, I facilitate collaborative processes with your stakeholders to build consensus about how and why this work will get done to ensure sustainable progress.
My approach is built on years of research, including the landmark Canadian Orchestral Repertoire Reports and hands-on experience as both the Senior Manager of Community Partnerships and Repertoire Diversity and subsequently a consultant for Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and Ensemble Obiora - Canada's first classical music ensemble composed primarily of professional musicians from culturally diverse backgrounds
This background, combined with databases of conductor profiles and diverse repertoire, offers orchestras resources for thoughtful evolution. Let’s work together to advance your programming goals!
